i know this is not a happy post, but i just have to talk about it.
did anyone watch the kentucky derby this past saturday? i did (with my mom via phone since she is in FL)...i am an animal lover and my favorite animal growing up has always been horses. i just love them, their beauty, strength, gentleness...all wrapped up into one.

during the hours before the race, the pre-race show was highlighting some of the horses, trainers, owner...telling us more about them and little personal stories about them. so my mom and i were picking out "favorites"...you know, "i like that one cause she has a pretty name", or "he's pretty, i like him!"...or "look at that horse, his tongue is hanging out (this is true! and the horses name was Colonel John)!" you know, we are really technical about picking our houses!:-)
so we decided we liked Recapturetheglory (the trainers had a good story), Pyro (he was pretty! but i argued that they all were pretty!), Big Brown (his jockey had a good story), and Eight Belles!...
we liked her for several reasons...she was pretty (shiny black), had a pretty green blanket and bridle, and she was a GIRL! the only filly in the race. 20 horses, and only one girl...so of course we wanted her to win!!! and only 3 times in the history of the kentucky derby did a filly win...
the race started and no mishaps happened, which made me happy. ever since Barbaro, the start of the race always makes me nervous.
so, we are watching the race...and belle is up in the front pack the whole time!!! go belle! she came in second to big brown, ran the race of her life...looked so beautiful...
then, while pulling her up after the race, she fell. what happened? come to find out, she broke both front ankles and had to be euthanized right there on the track. i actually think i cried....i felt connected to her...i dont really know why? maybe because i am an animal lover?, she was a girl?, and so pretty?...and ran her heart out! i cant even imagine how the people who actually know her (her owner, trainer, jockey) are feeling...for one second they are jumping up and down for joy, their horse came in second at the kentucky derby, and in a instant, she is gone, having to be euthanized on the track...i am posting this on monday, two days later, and still have tears in my eyes....
i know life can be over in an instant...it happens all the time, but it doesnt make it any easier.
